An Ode to Kumon

10/1/2010

The clock is ticking                                                                                                                   The time for Kumon is ripe for picking

The math facts need solving…                                                                                                 While Shakespeare is evolving

The day can be filled up                                                                                                         With school, sports, lessons, & stuff.

But I must save time for Kumon                                                                                                   As my parents say, ‘C’mon’!’

The message becomes clear.                                                                                                         The time for Kumon is near.

Finish Kumon & get it straight.                                                                                                     Kumon will make it all great!

Hi Dr. Lo,

I would like to share some good news about Rishi's progress. This year Rishi scored 98- percentile national level in his school ALT test. This made him qualify for the Stanford University talented Youth program. He will be starting has accelerated math program from April 1`st, 2006. The credit goes to Kumon program and your support in creating interest in Maths. Thank you very much.... I hope Rishi keeps working with you in Math. One more thing I wanted to let you know. Rishi is finding fractions(D 150 and more) very easy and finishing 5 pages in 8-10mins. Can I make him do 10 pages a day, until he is comfortable? Once it starts becoming difficult we can reduce it to 5 pages again..... Once again, thank you very much for your support.

Dear Dr. Lo,
In 2003, John scored in the 10th percentile for his age group on the Iowa Basic Skills test. That year, he started Kumon. He was 8 years old, in second grade (having repeated Kindergarten).
In 2004, we moved John to ****** School. That spring, after a year + of Kumon and a few months at ***** school, he scored in the 50th percentile. I was thrilled.
In 2005, after two years + of Kumon and a year and some at *****, he scored 64th percentile.
Today (May 22, 2006), after three years + of Kumon and 2 years + of ***** school, he scored 79th percentile! His highest scores are in the areas of "maps and diagrams" and "reference materials." He consistently demonstrates interest in engineering-type subject matter. For example, he wants to know about the design of roads, underground sewer systems, etc. This is more than a passing curiosity for him. He is also very interested in anything to do with computers. I'm beginning to think it is not an unrealistic goal to think that he COULD get an engineering degree of some kind. I used to think it was more or less out of the question, when his skills were much lower. We will keep encouraging him to improve even more. We always say, "See? Kumon works!" He resists that idea. But today he was indeed very proud to know that he is scoring in the 79th percentile. (Incidentally, different personnel at the ***** Public Schools told me a few years ago that he was "of average intelligence," and that having him take a 2nd year of kindergarten would practically guarantee that he would never graduate from high school.)
Next year . . . ? Stay tuned.

Dear Dr. Lo,
I'd like to share with you that Jane's high school Algebra II teacher has nominated her for the Mathematics Award of the United States Achievement Academy. There is no question in my mind that Jane's 9 years of Kumon study greatly developed Jane's math and study skills to this level that resulted in this honor. Thank you.
