- The Summary Block (Levels G, H, I) includes classic literature selections. However, a number of the passages actually deal with social studies, articles on various topics, and science. This can be difficult for the younger-age student to comprehend this because he/she has no background on these topics. Persevering brings the student to a higher level of vocabulary and reading skill in order to succeed with high school and college level reading.
- If students can hang in there through the Summary Block, they will easily succeed in the Critique Block (Levels J, K, L). Students and teachers often consider this the “good stuff.” It is easier and more engaging because of the literary selections. Level J's vocabulary is difficult, but students tend to persevere with that. There may be no repeats in Levels K and L, depending upon the student's age and his/her understanding. The purpose is to introduce the student to various literary selections.
- An important extra that our G-L students receive is daily practice and personalized feedback on their writing and grammar skills. The teachers who work with our higher level Reading students are committed to taking this support above and beyond the focus areas of each level. This valuable asset will impact all of their future educational and career goals, because the student will be able to present themselves and their knowledge areas in the very best light.
- As a reading instructor for the advanced reading students, I have the opportunity to work with certain students for several years. It is very rewarding to observe how each of these students grows intellectually and emotionally as he/she achieves the goal of program completion. These students demonstrate diligence, determination, commitment, patience, and open-mindedness.
- Kumon grows and fosters these attributes, which is why a student who completes the program is such an extraordinary person. From “To Kill a Mockingbird” to “Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde” to “Macbeth”, we are able to analyze and discuss the meaning or message in these literary works. No matter what the student’s age, it is quite amazing how intuitive and insightful each student is.
- Because of the time frame necessary for program completion, I am able to witness maturation in each student that is incredible and deserving of great respect. A goal of Kumon is to instill in these students a desire to continue reading throughout their lives and to be life long learners. Congratulations to our program completers.

She could have finished earlier, but she did a repeat to allow time for discussion about the nuances in the various selections. Ananya answered the questions in her own words which is evidence of her mastery of these advanced levels. Ananya's hard work and determination are exemplary. Congrats, Ananya!
