Commitment demonstrated by parents and students is a prerequisite for enrollment into the program.- 100% attendance and homework completion are the keys to success in the program.
- Students are expected to attend class regularly.
- Students spending time in class with our staff allows us to assess their progress, guide them in understanding new concepts, motivate them towards self-learning as well as prepare appropriate homework for them.
- Students should follow class procedures.
- No food or drink is allowed during class hours. Students need to complete their work independently in a quiet and nurturing environment. Parents and siblings may wait quietly in the waiting area or in the mall area within the building.
- Any student disrupting class will be given a chance to work at a different table. If disruptive behavior continues he/she will be asked to leave.
- Correspondence study is possible when parents demonstrate a strong understanding of and commitment to the program.
- Parents and caretakers are responsible for the behavior of their children and maintaining the quiet use of the building. Do not talk on the cell phone or wait for your child in the hallway, stairwell or elevator area. Do not sit on the floor in the hallways. If you need to run an errand please return within 30 min for students with one subject or within 60 min for students with two subjects. Parents and older students need to sign the professional building codes of conduct prior to enrollment.

An important aspect of the program is to help our students develop and maintain a good daily study habit towards self-learning. - Establishing a homework time at home is a key to success in this program.
- Students are expected to complete 10-20 minutes of math and/or reading homework each day. Parents need to grade homework (answer keys are provided) and make sure errors are corrected to 100% before returning them to the center.
- Students must return all their homework each time they come to class and exchange the completed homework for new homework each week.
- One week of homework is given on the first class day of the week. One of the homework assignments will be used on the second day of class if the student attends class twice a week.
- Home record sheets are provided with each week’s homework exchange. Parents are expected to stay on top of the homework assignment, and grade and record the scores on the record sheet provided.
Please use a red pen for grading. - Make a large circle on each page (front and/or back) if it is perfect.
- Grading marks on the problem numbers: Use checks for full errors and use triangles for partial errors.
- Circle the corresponding % on the grading scale on each page for the errors made on that page.
- All worksheets have preprinted grading scale except:
a) Math levels 7A-5A - all should be marked 100% when completed.
b) Reading Levels 7A-3A - all should be marked "1" for consistently meeting the learning expectation, "2" when frequently meeting the learning expectation and "3" when expectation is met only sometimes. Learning expectation in printed near the grading scale.
c) Reading pages that involve only oral reading do not have any grading scale - should be given an Oral reading mark of 1, 2, or 3 depending on fluency and accuracy ("1" being the best).
In Math
Full error = wrong answer.Partial error = right answer but wrong intermediate steps or incomplete answer.
In Reading
Full error = comprehension or wrong multiple choice.Partial error = spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar.
- Full errors - mark the corresponding error number on the grading scale, one full error per question.
- Partial error in Reading - mark off 5% per question even if the question contains more than one partial error in each question. Partial error in Math - mark off the same weight as full error
- Oral Reading Scores - rate the fluency of your child's oral reading according to the following
1 - Excellent
2 - Average
3 - Needs Improvement
Enter time for each day's assignment. - Enter each page's % score in the record sheet provided each day after grading your child's work.
- If the page's last digit is 5, enter the % score under column '5.' If the page's last digit is 9, enter the score under column '9,' etc.
- Use '-' for 100%, 9 for>90%, 8 for>80%, 7 for>70%, 6 for<69%. Leave other columns blank for work not done.
- Use 1, 2, or 3 for the oral reading scores.
- Continual communication between parents, students and the instructor is important to the program.
- We have many ways for parents, students and the Kumon staff to communicate such as communication notes, telephone calls, monthly newsletters, parent’s information meetings, parent and instructor meetings, and biannual conferences.
- Every May and November parent conferences are held to discuss student progress to-date and six months' projection.
- The office should be notified of any absences. Leave a message of the absence at 952-920-9082 or email us at info@kumonedina.com
- In case of absences, parents need to make arrangements to pick up the homework from the center.
- During vacations students are encouraged to continue their daily study habit. The amount of work can be adjusted.
- Please notify the center at least one week in advance of the absences using the notice of absence form available at the center.
- The center will be closed during major holidays as posted in the parent waiting area. It will also be announced on our web site calendar.
- In case of severe weather, the center will follow the closing policy of the Edina and Eden Prairie public schools, and this will be announced on our phone message system. Homework can be picked up on the following day.
